My stepdad's fantasy
His breath was hot against my ear.
“Stay down,” he whispered.
I nodded, though my body barely listened. My hands were shaking so badly I couldn’t tell if I was holding onto him or the forklift or nothing at all.
Marcus’s voice again.
Closer now.
“I know every inch of this place, little brother,” he said. “I built it, I wired it ,I own it.”
A click.
Then another.
Red emergency lights flared to life along the floor, thin glowing strips that painted the warehouse in blood-colored lines. Shadows stretched and warped, turning every object into something threatening, something alive.
