Chapter 53 Whispers of the Unknown Fiona's POV The air was still, heavy with the weight of unspoken fears. I hadn’t slept well, tossing and turning all night with the same recurring dream. Dark figures lingered at the edges of my consciousness, their red eyes piercing through the shadows, always watching, always waiting. Every time I thought I could see their faces, I’d wake up in a cold sweat, heart racing, breath ragged.

My heart is racing and adrenaline floods through me. “Do you hear anything else?” I flick my eyes to Lucas’s face. “There’s no way this is over yet.” “No,” he agrees. “It was too easy. Almost like it was testing us.” “And now that it knows it’s up against a vampire and a witch, they’re going to pull out all the big guns.” I close my eyes and shake my head. “Let’s just hope it’s not hellhounds again.” The floorboards creak and Lucas turns, looking at something I can’t see in the dark.

He had put an entire house of Dhampirs to sleep as if their wills meant nothing. That was power I didn’t have. Power I couldn’t even fake. And the question hit me like ice in my chest—how in hell were we going to put someone like that to sleep when all he’d want to do in return was rip us apart? I could understand Adrian’s reluctance now. But understanding didn’t quiet the knot of fear twisting deep in my gut. Fear of dying. Fear of watching my clan burn with me. The room was silent. Afterwards I decide to go back upstairs and rest for the remainder of the evening. Night falls, and with it a thunderstorm stirs up. Lightening cracks and for some reason outside of my bedroom, I swear I see sinister red eyes peering in at me. Feel like it must be the exhaustion of the day. I close the blinds, turn on N*****x. I feel dread again as a precaution. I make sure the house is locked up with the deadbolts he installed. I also lock my room to make sure I am extra safe. I snuggle up with a blanket and put on the TV. I change my mind about N*****x and put on “Discovery of Witches” on A****n Prime. Wishing I could find a man like Matthew.
