“I feel it too.”
The words were barely more than a whisper, but they were real. The moment I said them, everything inside me went still. Not lighter, not easier, just clear. My chest tightened immediately after, guilt following close behind, sharp and familiar.
“Kael…” I whispered, my voice breaking slightly. The name felt different now. Not wrong, never that, but not enough to quiet everything else anymore. That realization hurt more than anything. I pressed my hands against my face briefly, trying to steady myself. “I’m not replacing you,” I said again, the same words I had clung to for so long, but they didn’t hold the same certainty they used to. Because this wasn’t replacing.
