“Elena, NOW!”
Elena rushes toward me, hand diving for my purse. She yanks it away and pulls the phone out just as I reach for it.
Her eyes flicker with recognition. Her lips part into a wide, glowing smile. “It’s Noah,” she says, breathless.
Then she looks at me. And for the first time, I see her clearly, Elena, desperate and determined, caught between love and something far more selfish.
“Sorry, Ray,” she whispers. “I promise I’ll pay you back for this. Please. Just let me have this. I miss him so much.”
