Amelia's POV I pulled off the promise ring from my finger and placed it on the table in front of me. It was the epitome of a promise that was never fulfilled. I told myself I wouldn't cry, but tears ran freely down my face. I dabbed my cheeks with my handkerchief and ordered a glass of whiskey. Earlier today, I had stepped into my engagement party, just to find Damian, my boyfriend, kneeling on one knee in front of my younger sister, sliding the ring I had picked out onto her finger while everyone clapped and cheered.

She follows me to my bedroom and leans against the door jamb while I power up my phone. "You're much more agreeable." I shrug. "Two months will do that to you." "Well, I'm proud of you for opening up to him." She walks over to me to envelope me in a hug again. "I can't wait to tell the bitches at work, my sister is engaged to Alessandro Moretti. They will claw my eyes out!" I laugh, genuinely happy. "How about I show the ring off on Friday night?" She claps her hands together. "Now we're talking! And we're gonna need a wedding planner!"

"You hit me?" I let out a cold, mocking smile and said nothing. I raised my hand again. Before it could fall, someone grabbed my wrist. Lillian's face was cold and tense. "Silas, you've gone too far.
