She paused, staring at the page.
“FLAMES,” she said, as if reminding herself. “It stands for Friends, Lovers, Admirers, Marriage, Enemies, and Secret lovers.”
Secret lovers.
My throat tightened.
“It is a game I played in high school,” she added.
High school.
I did not understand half the things she said sometimes, but I found myself listening anyway. Watching her face as she concentrated. Watching the way her brows furrowed slightly.
“So we cancel out the letters in our names,” she explained, “and count what remains. Then we count through FLAMES, and whatever it lands on becomes our relationship.”
