“You didn’t push me away… not really.” I blinked. “That’s not… I mean, I—” My words tumbled over themselves. Every time he got close, my brain forgot how to function. He tilted his head, studying me like he could read every thought. “You’re flustered,” he said simply, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. “Cute, actually.” “Flustered? Cute?” I scoffed, trying to regain some dignity. “I am not cute!”

“I just want to understand the relationship. Because clearly.... you’re fucking him.” The vulgarity of the word made me flinch. I felt heat flood my face. Shame, fear, and anger all tangled up in my throat. He saw it, and he liked it. “Oh, now you’re flustered and embarrassed?” He leaned in with a smirk. “But that is what you’re doing, isn’t it?” “I… I…” My hands were tingling. I felt like I was floating outside my own body like I was watching someone else live this nightmare.

He exhaled slowly, embarrassment settling heavy in his chest. And then came the laughter. The mocking kind that men used when they didn’t want to look too mean but wanted everyone to know they’d noticed. “Guess you’re tapped out, Trent?” someone said, half-laughing. Trent forced a smile that felt brittle. “Yeah. Must be a glitch. Happens all the time.” His fingers were already fishing for his phone with clumsy hands. Maybe if he moved quickly enough, no one would notice how flustered he was.

I stumbled over my words, completely flustered. "Um, um, he's not—I'm not—he's not…" My voice kept tangling up in itself, and I could barely form a coherent sentence. My cheeks were burning, and I could feel everyone around us stealing glances at the commotion I was unintentionally creating. Across the table, Emerson seemed entirely too entertained by my struggle. He leaned back in his chair, one eyebrow raised, lips twitching as though he were fighting back a laugh. It was infuriating.
