Eliana kept pace beside her, clutching her purse strap like a lifeline, eyes darting nervously toward the exit as though expecting someone to follow.
They reached Fanny’s car, parked crookedly between two concrete pillars. Fanny unlocked the doors with a sharp beep of the key fob and slid into the driver’s seat without a word. Eliana climbed in beside her, slamming the door harder than necessary. The engine roared to life, but Fanny didn’t pull out yet. Instead, she fished her phone from her coat pocket, thumbed through her contacts, and hit Indy’s name. The call connected on the second ring.
