Even on the day I was discharged from the hospital, there was still no sign of Isabel Eaton. Throughout the time I was hospitalized, she didn't drop by to visit me, not even once. With my right arm still in a cast, I had no choice but to take a cab home. Yet, when I got there, I couldn't unlock the door no matter what I tried. Left with no other option, I called Isabel. When the call connected, it was the voice of Cameron Dunn, Isabel's first love, that I heard through the speaker.

“To help Rose.” He hesitated, then held the rabbit out with shaking hands. “Tell him to be brave.” Elena’s heart broke. “I will.” Minutes later, the ribbon was tied back around Bunny’s neck, a tiny listening device hidden inside the worn blue fabric. Elena stepped out into the rain with Bunny in her arms. The path to the chapel cut through the black gardens, slick with moonlight and water. Behind her, Blackwood House glowed like a prison pretending to be a home.

“But it’s… strange.” “What do you mean?” I asked. “The trail loops. Like someone wants to confuse us. They doubled back, crossed their own path.” “They’re trained,” Dalton said grimly. No rogue did that. Not unless they had experience… or orders. My jaw locked. “We split up. Dalton and I go east. Rex and Omar, circle back north in case they left a decoy scent. Stay in comms. No heroics.” Everyone nodded, and we moved. The deeper we went, the thicker the forest grew, branches clawing at our clothes, fog curling low along the ground like ghostly tendrils. The air felt wrong here. Still. Too quiet.

When I blink, they’re gone. “Did you see that?” I ask. “Depends. Are you going to hit me if I say yes?” “Maybe.” “Then no, not seeing a thing.” Despite myself, I almost smile. A heartbeat later, the forest shifts. The trees lean inward; the air grows too thick to breathe. A faint trail glows on the ground ahead, and I almost cry when I see the tiny paw prints traced in silver on the ground. Rabbit tracks. My pulse jumps. I crouch, fingers brushing the prints. Still warm. “This way.”

I used the time to cast a small warming spell on myself, barely enough to keep my fingers from freezing, and then another on Aileen's stuffed rabbit, strengthening the tracking link. The stable boy watched us with wide eyes, but neither of us explained. Then we were riding. The wind hit us the moment we left the shelter of the stables, sharp and brutal, carrying snow that stung the eyes and scraped the skin. I pulled my hood lower and hunched over the mare's neck. The monster was already trying to bulge out and now that little bunny is touching it, it's already trying to burst out from its hidden manor. This little bunny doesn't know what she's doing to me. She's driving not only me crazy but Hunter too. Hunter is already losing it and he's trying to take over, my eyes are slowly turning dark. Little bunny innocently stared into my eyes with her big doe eyes. I closed my eyes. “Calm down Hunter." “I can't, she's driving me crazy!" “She's doing the same to me. She's so innocent, we need to take things slowly with her."

“You’re new. And you arrived with the Alpha.” That explained nothing and everything at the same time. Halfway through the gardens, movement caught my eye. A small white shape darted between the hedges. It was a bunny. It paused, its ears were twitching, then it suddenly bolted toward the trees. I smiled without thinking. “I’ll be right back,” I said instinctively. “Lyra…” Mira started. I went off the path. The forest got quiet and cold but I kept going, just to realize the bunny had vanished and the packhouse wasn’t visible anymore. The trees looked strange. I felt nervous and looked around, scanning the forest.

It’s the scent of cantaloupe, and my mouth waters as I take off in a sprint behind her, hoping not to lose her trail and to catch up with her soon. I follow her trail out of the garden and into a labyrinth of some sort, the bushes on either side of me shaping into a maze. I hardly have time to think about how strange this is as I’m chasing after a fragrance. Eventually, I run into a wall of hedges and have to turn around, thinking that Rose must have done the same thing. I turn back, find her scent again, and follow it until I can actually hear her crying. I slow down and cautiously walk around the next several corners until I can see her. “Let's just give her some time.” “I see.” Nodding, I got up on the desk, still observing him. “Aren't you worried about her?” “And?” “Let's follow her,” I suggested, hoping he would jump at that. “We don't have to let her see us. We will just trail after her in the shadows, to keep her safe.” “Safe?” He scoffed. “Do you think she will understand it as that?” He exhaled. “But that's what we are doing!” I argued, knowing he was right. Our Bunny would assume we were monitoring her should she discover we followed her. Things wouldn't go in our favour.
