Dismay and fear overwhelmed every one of us as the words repeated in our heads. Four will be murdered today! Who will be the four? As if to answer my question, the door was pushed open and the man with the mask walked in.

Even Luna chuckled softly, and the atmosphere grew light and cheerful—until it didn’t. The room fell silent when an elderly woman in a white hood entered, holding a wooden staff carved with light symbols. Everyone stood in respect. The seer—looked right at me. Or maybe through me. Her eyes were cloudy, ancient, and knowing. “I see four lights surrounding you, daughter of Mystic Guardian,” she said slowly. “Four bonds. Four destinies.” The room froze. “Four… mates?” Luna whispered. My breath caught. Zion stared at me, stunned, while trying to process what he’d just heard.

“No. I mean just looked.” He turned back to me, studying my face. “Just looked.” “Yes.” “Uh-huh.” The way he said it made my stomach flip. “What happened up there?” I asked, desperate to change the subject. “Is everyone okay? Are you okay ?” “We’re fine,” he said. “They’re not.” They’re dead. He didn’t say it, but I heard it anyway. “How many?” I whispered. “Four.” He wiped his hands on his jeans, smearing blood across the dark fabric. “Sent to test our defenses. See if you were really here.”

I didn’t imagine the voice. It was as clear as day, as loud as if she were standing right next to me. And even though my mind is doubting it, my heart knows for a fact that it was her. Except she’s dead. …Right? Or is she “dead” in the same way Headmaster Stroud suspects my father is dead? Meaning, alive somewhere. “Come on,” Alec whispers. He leads the way out of the bush, and we peek around the pool house’s corner. The coast is clear.
