I hoped the caretaker of our cottage would remember me, seeing as I had no identification. Three days of hell. I hardly ate. Couldn’t stand the smell of fish. It was everywhere — the stench of fish, mixed with the smell of fuel and oil, unwashed bodies and cigarette smoke. The mix made an offensive perfume that clung to your skin and left a horrid taste in your mouth. But when I thought it would never end, the boat docked at the port.

The next time I saw Chase Reed, it was at a little guesthouse in the Rockies. I'd just finished feeding my son breakfast and was wiping his mouth when Chase came out from the kitchen carrying a tray. Our eyes met. I saw his pupils dilate in shock. Three years had passed. His skin was weathered and reddened from the sun, his face covered in stubble, with new lines etched around his eyes from the harsh elements. Then his gaze landed on my son. He froze mid-step, his eyes going wide with disbelief before flooding with joy. He hurried over, his eyes locked on my little boy. "Sweetheart... can you say 'Daddy'?" I lowered my head, turned sideways, and pulled my son protectively into my arms

Life was going to be so different now. Oleg helped me onto a small fishing boat, Jon’s body now stored under a stack of traps that were set out to catch seafood. I took a seat as far away from it as possible and watched as Oleg, flanked by the two men, guided the boat out of the docks and to the open ocean. The sea air filtered through my hair and I drew in a breath, glad to not feel queasy at all from the gentle rise and fall of the boat as it cut through the water. The sunrise was gorgeous to watch as well, and by the time Oleg reached his destination, I was feeling far different than I had been on land.

My whole life. “Chin up,” Mother said, shooting a look at me as the boat docked. A shock of sudden fear slithered up my spine, and I took a single step back, all the hidden emotions I’d been shoving down rising to the surface. Three large, burly men stepped off the deck and onto the dock, spotting us a second before heading in our direction. “Evelina Bloom?” the largest of the three men asked. Mother nodded, tilting her head at me.

He has done it the last two days here while we got unpacked. I like his boat. It’s a lot homelier than I expected and roomier too. It feels like a holiday lodge on water and has lovely bright and neutral décor in a pretty spacious plan. I scale up and run across the deck before climbing down the metal ladder onto the pier and running like the wind for home. Mentally cursing and hoping Greta is unconscious and suffering, so I will be the last thing on her mind.

“Cots are downstairs. Buckle up for a wild ride.” Just exactly what I wanted to hear…. I make my way down to the bunks with Poppy, Mystica, and Ben, while Antony helps Captain Dave and the other boatman, a guy named Jude I wasn’t introduced to but heard being shouted at, get the boat ready to leave. I feel the boat’s engine start up and then we are moving. I’m sitting on a cot so uncomfortable, it may as well be a rock. The blanket tossed at the foot of it smells like a mix of sweat and puke.

the conservation officer said. The boat hit a rock, and the conservation officer frowned. “Do you two need me to come back there and drive?!” “I’d like to see you try it, old man!” a frustrated Mountie shot back. “Then get out of my way, whipper snapper,” the conservation officer barked. The Mountie who had been running the motor switched places with the conservation officer. “Caleb, Jacey,” the conservation officer said authoritatively. “Get out them paddles. You two at least have some experience, not like this landlubber.”

The sirens faded, then surged—they’d taken the bait. The boat was a rusted fishing trawler, its cabin dark. Brian vaulted the railing, jamming a key into the ignition. The engine sputtered, coughed, roared. Jake collapsed on deck, sweat and harbor mist clinging to his skin. “You planned this.” Brian smirked, steering them into open water. “Always have an exit, brother.” The city skyline shrank behind them, its lights smearing like wet paint. Jake’s hands wouldn’t stop shaking.

It’s over-the-top and borderline infuriating. I’m about to fire something back, but the sliding door shrieks open. Cold, salty air slams in, burning my nose with fish and sea. Boots scrape. Rough hands yank me forward. “Fuck off,” I snarl, voice edged with murder. “Just get them on the boat!” a rough voice orders. “Boat … great, they’re gonna dump us in the ocean!” Jesse grumbles next to me. The hood tears off my head. Sunlight blinds me. I squint until the world sharpens and shapes start making sense.
