He took his eyes off her and looked at the street. As usual, it was noisy, with all the honks of horns and engines roaring. By the pavement, penniless children and adults whose bodies could almost resemble a skeleton sat on the sidewalk, holding their hand out for alms to each passerby, who mainly were white-collar workers who had their head down and backs hunched. One woman, who seemed to be in a hurry, was chasing a jeepney that had just taken off.
