An older man stepped forward, breathing heavily as he reached into the pocket of his coat. He was an "Old Salt," someone who had been working on ships for the majority of his life. CHAPTER ONE Scream of the Siren The Elvis bobbed idly on the ocean. The forty-foot fishing boat was owned by skipper Blenheim ‘Cockles’ Cochran. At this moment Cochran paced about his weathered deck, checking lines as he sang along to the beaten-up CD player lashed to the wheelhouse with thick rope. ‘You in pain again, skipper?’ a squat, broad-shouldered man with a rosy-red face said, grinning. ‘I can get you somethin’ for it, if you’d like? You need a double dose, I reckon.’

After I got to the ship, except for the man who talked to me, the two men both got up and started doing their jobs: an anchor collector and a ship starter. The boat left the harbor and entered the open sea while I was still bewildered. The man pointed to the little chair on the deck and said to me, "Sit there! I'm Tom." Then, Tom said to the driver and introduced, "he is Paul." Finally, Tom pointed to the man who had just finished unloading the anchor, "And he is Finn." Finn went over to Tom and me. He smiled and said, "Why are you so late?" "I had some trouble on the road. Sorry to keep you waiting so long!" I politely replied.

Jeannine scrambled farther up the roof. A glint of sunlight off metal caught her attention. Two white men in an aluminum fishing boat with a tiny outboard motor putt-putted toward her. They waved as they made their way through the floating bodies. They looked filthy—one with matted and tangled hair that matched his greasy beard, the other wore a stained John Deere baseball cap with an uneven brim. She didn’t care what they looked like, only that they were there and saw her. All Jeannine felt was relief.

He is no longer our concern.” A low hum of an engine echoed from the docks ahead, and an old fisherman in a faded canvas apron stepped out from behind a woodpile, stopping dead in his tracks as he caught sight of two soaking wet strangers walking up from the jagged shore. “You folks look like you had a rough turn out on the bay,” the old man called out, his voice rough and suspicious as he gripped a heavy wooden scaling knife. “Where is your boat?”
