After one particularly heated argument, she went out and got the tattoo. When I found her, I broke down crying. She hadn't used any anesthesia. Although her face had gone pale from the pain, her eyes shone brightly. She'd touched my face and said proudly, "No one is ever taking you away from me." Back then, I'd naively believed that was what everlasting love felt like. That was why, years later, when another man sent me photos of himself kissing that same tattoo, something inside me had simply broken. I couldn't feel sadness or heartbreak.

Enzo teased in return. I giggled and picked up a handful of snow, dumping it on his chest. He pulled me down against him so that the snow soaked through my coat as well, freezing my skin even more. Despite the coldness, however, I couldn’t stop laughing, and neither could Enzo. Still laughing, I pressed my cold lips against his and kissed him deeply. His lips linger against my skin, the warmth of his kiss seeping into me, making everything else in the world fade away.

Taking my hand, he stands up and leads me out the kitchen door. Walking out the emergency exit and standing in the alley, he leans me up against the wall and kisses me. When our lips touch, it's like fireworks and an earthquake going off all at once. My insides feel like they are about to burst when he lifts me up by my butt and I instinctively wrap my legs around his waist.

Her pout faded into a smile as she leaned into his embrace. “Then tell me,” she asked teasingly, “when did you finally realize you liked me?” Xavier gazed out at the sunset over the ocean, his voice low and steady. “The moment I saw you lying in that cryogenic chamber. I realized that without you, the world felt empty. Just a hollow, endless place.” Starla lifted her head, cupping his face in her hands. As the last light of the setting sun bathed them in gold, they kissed—deep, lingering, filled with all the love they had waited so long for.

The intensity between us grew, a spark that started in my chest, as it had before for him, only this time it grew with each long look and his gentle fingers pressed against my wrists. He leaned in and kissed my nose. He hovered there and I didn't move. He tilted his head, kissing my lips. I remained still, kissing him back. It was a light kiss, but he kept it going soft and steady. His tongue teased my lips and I welcomed it. He made a delightful noise and leaned into me, tongue darting into my mouth. I leaned far back trying not to fall. My hand searched for something to hold to, I grabbed hold of his shoulder and then the back of his neck.
