I smile gratefully, nodding, and hurry out of the car, inside the dark apartment, where Berlioz is waiting by the door. It’s almost like he knows I was coming, as silly as I know that sounds. A few short minutes later, after I’ve gathered a few changes of clothes, a sizable bag of cat food and some first aid supplies, I lift Berlioz into my arms, taking one last look at my apartment.
