Her mind was running wild of all possibilities of when and where she had dropped the book. She got it off Flower-Bender’s back and shook it upside down like a woman at the verge of insanity. Returning the book to the shelves, I wondered if I would find anything helpful in the library. I nearly lost my balance as I put the book on the shelf. Bracing myself on the shelf, I quickly grabbed it when it leaned over. I managed to keep it from falling, but it still caused a few books to fall. Picking up the books, I found their rightful place and returned them to the shelf. As I put up the last book, it seemed something was stuck behind the books, preventing them from sliding back. Rearranging the books, I found a small brown book wedged behind them, but it didn’t have a title or seem to belong to the library.

I never did. The book slips from my fingers and lands on the floor with a soft thud. I don’t pick it up.

Frustrated, I attempted to retrieve the books from their hands, but they towered over me. They stood before me, as they began tearing the books apart, a cruel act that felt like a personal attack. “Please, stop! Ma Felicia stepped forward slightly. “What is it?” she asked, her voice sharp. The man swallowed. “One of the compendium’s most valued books has been tampered with.” The words hit like a blow. My fingers curled slightly at my sides. *Tampered.* Not stolen. Not entirely. But enough. Enough to matter. Enough to be noticed. I kept my expression neutral.
