I backed away, startled by the coolness under my touch, only to find that he wasn't a man at all—but a stone statue. His boulder-like features began to twitch, making an eerily cracking noise and suddenly his face contorted from that of a man to a dragon. The beast grabbed the mature woman in one hand and reached for her clothes with the other. It laughed a gruesome and terrible sound as it preceded to tear off Jane's clothing. The stone creature is silent as it writhes there for a minute. Even its companion pauses in shock until the shadow gargoyle vanishes.

The sound moved backward, toward the tail, then hooked around toward the right wing. "Visual!" Marcus screamed, pointing out the right window. Clinging to the starboard engine nacelle was a nightmare. It was an Elder Gargoyle—massive, with skin like black obsidian and eyes that glowed with a cunning, hateful intelligence. It had survived the silver mist by encasing itself in a cocoon of its own wings, sacrificing the outer layer to protect its core. Now, it was stripping the metal casing off the jet engine with its bare hands.

I screamed, my whole body jerking back, but Papa’s hand clamped down on my arm, steady, unyielding. “Relax, Eleanor,” he said, calm as stone. “The glass is reinforced.
