The tension in the van is so thick you can taste it as we arrive at the pack’s guard gate. “Siren, do you know the guard?” Javelin asks, just as Raptor growls. “He’s one of the attackers!” Raptor leaps out of the van and smashes his fist into the guy’s face, knocking him out. Councilman Warren jumps out of our van, just as Councilman Charlie does the same from the first van. “Stand down,” Councilman Warren says with enough force to let the other gate guards know that he’s an Alpha and he means business.

“Natasha.” “She knocked the gate clean off just like before! The same goes, she demanded to see the Luna! She’s making a fuss there and our warrior barely hold her off!” The warrior hurriedly explained the situation. I helplessly sighed. “Why does she always do such thing.” I looked at the warrior. “Take us to her.” After the warrior guarded us, the scene was exactly as chaotic as what the warrior had described. The massive iron gate hung crooked, its hinges twisted as though they were made of paper. Several warriors stood frozen, their spears were raised but clearly too intimidated to advance.

I had to believe that. When we finally arrived at the imposing gates of the Palace, the familiar sight of the towering walls and the stoic guards did little to ease my anxiety. We were greeted by the warriors, their faces grim, their eyes filled with concern. The Chief Warrior, Walther, appeared, probably alerted by the guard at the gate.

"He's not expecting anyone. Did he invite you?" "It's urgent. Please let us through." The guard studied her for a moment, then held up a hand. "Wait here." He stepped to the side and made a call to one of his colleagues inside. "There's someone at the gate asking to see the boss. Says her name is—" He glanced at Elena. "Elena Carter," she said. "Elena Carter is her name. She has two others with her. One woman, one man." Inside, the guard relayed the message to Harrison directly. "Sir, a young woman named Elena Carter is at the gate. Two people with her."

A faint metallic scent burned at the edge of his awareness. Then he saw it. Shadows moving where no light should cast them. "Breach!" he shouted. "To arms!" But it was too late. Cloaked figures emerged from the rocks, eyes glowing with pale violet light. They moved like water over stone. Not undead. Not beasts. They were the Gatekeeper Scouts. The first wave struck silently, their blades humming with black fire. One warrior cried out before collapsing, his chest split open by a curved blade that didn’t bleed, it smoked.

A hidden gate. Part of the Grey's network. Elena ran, half-carrying Maya who was still trying to reach for the forest. They made it through the gate just as the Iron Ridge wolves reached the wall. One of them snarled, reaching through— Garrett slammed the gate shut. It locked with a sound like metal on stone, some old mechanism engaging. "It'll hold," he said. "For a few minutes. We need to move." The passage on the other side was narrow and dark. Elena could hear the warriors on the other side, trying to force the gate.

It was all so… Human. Aradhon hated humans, especially the one who wielded the Guardian Sword. Prince Dakath wanted a portal, a Gateway to the Nether. Aradhon couldn't care less about that, to be honest. The Gateway was not his goal. He wanted the Guardian Sword. Once he had that in his possession, he would be taking Prince Dakath's place—his kingdom, his power, his wealth. It was supposed to be easy. Bertram Leary, in gaining Dakath's Gateway, was supposed to take the Warrior out in the process. It hadn't worked that way, of course, and Jordan Thomas was part of the reason Bertram failed.

Another hit, and the wood splintered, bolts flying from the reinforced steel as the gate threatened to give way. “Again!” Amani’s command sliced through the air as she braced herself alongside her warriors, ready for another strike. “Charge!” She ordered, her voice carrying the weight of her conviction. They surged forward once more, this time with a ferocity that defied reason. The gate, no match for their combined strength, crumbled under the assault, collapsing with a deafening crash. The guards on the other side had already shifted into their wolves, their growls filling the air as they prepared to defend their territory.

But still, I persist with what I do, bearing in mind that what I am doing is for the best. The sight of a gateway comes into sight. And in that gateway, the expected is seen — a bunch of warriors protecting the entrance into whatever was beyond the gateway. I would have stopped to address my warriors once more but decide not to at the last moment. I continue walking down the path to approach the gateway with my men and just as I am almost at the destination, the warriors have sighted my men and me. Instantly, they are on the move to lunge at us as they draw out swords and every other weapon. Yes, it is obvious that I am trespassing but it was for a good reason.
