The path curved sharply, then— A tall metal gate rose in front of them, dark and cold, guarded by two cameras. Nathan stopped the car. “Stay quiet. I’ll try the codes.” Noah leaned closer as Nathan typed the first sequence. Nothing. Another code. Still nothing. “Nathan…” Noah whispered. “Wait.” Nathan typed a longer string of numbers. Silence. Then— Click. The gate slid open. Noah let out a shaky breath. “You’re brilliant.” Nathan gave a humorless smile. “No. Victoria is just predictable.” They drove in. The gate closed behind them with a heavy thud.

Ryder’s POV I chuckled and shook my head as I watched my daughter bounce off to pass out her invitations. I open my laptop but pause when I feel someone pushing against the link. “Hey, there's someone at the front gate for you. The guard at the gate is new to this position, and he doesn't know your link since you're also new,” Tate said through the link. “Okay, thank you,” I said as I closed my laptop. I turned and looked around before spotting a Delta 1 I trusted. After handing him my laptop, I headed toward the front gate.

Thorne asked, leaning forward with his sightless eyes fixed on the sound of the paper crinkling. "No, they’re talking about a pact to protect something called the Gate, and Elena is telling my mother that the men are becoming obsessed with a power hidden beneath the territories that they aren't meant to touch," I explained, my heart hammering as I read a line about a Key born of both houses that was meant to keep the balance.

she said into the intercom, her voice perfectly cold, detached, and authoritative. The yellow lasers stopped. For three agonizing seconds, the gatehouse's automated systems processed the encrypted code against the Inner Council’s central ledger. Suddenly, the flashing yellow lights turned a solid, welcoming green. “CREDENTIALS VERIFIED. WELCOME BACK, KANE GROUP PROXY. PROCEED TO SECURITY BAY 4 FOR MANUAL VERIFICATION AND RECLAMATION STAMPING.” The massive, three-ton titanium pressure gate groaned upward, releasing a cloud of warm, clean air that smelled of ozone and expensive synthetic perfume—a stark contrast to the wet rust and salt of the lowlands.

“Do it.” Wynn went. Brynn went to find the senior patrol captain and the gate guard and gave the order, calmly, the lady’s voice the wolves had grown used to. The gate closed. New arrivals were turned back at the perimeter and held at a distance until they could be cleared individually. The stores from the three previous shipments since the team rode out were pulled and re-inspected.

Zayden POV Two hundred wolves hit the western gate. The full weight of Caden Voss's assembled force drove against the western wall with the commitment of an army. The gate held for some time, then it didn't. The timber crossbeam cracked first. Then the iron bracket on the left side pulled free from the stone mounting. Then the gate swung inward under the pressure of two hundred bodies and hit the inner yard wall. They came through like water through a broken dam.

A third voice cut in sharply. “It reacts to emotional proximity.” That made my steps slow. Inside the room, figures stood around a central table covered in maps. But these weren’t territorial maps. They were layered diagrams of something under the kingdom. One of the diagrams had a mark at its center labeled only as: GATE. My chest tightened again. I knew that word now in a way I didn’t want to and one of the council members spoke. “If convergence occurs without regulation, the gate will respond.” “And if it responds?” another asked.

“Three Relief Corridors—north, east, west. Each with an outer yard, a clinic, a holding square with shade, and a registration bench. Each with a ceiling announced daily by the radio—how many we can absorb before we snap. And we publish the number like weather, not like a secret: ‘Garden can take fifty today. Garden can take ten today. Garden can take none today and two hundred next week when grain lands.’ No lies. Lies trigger crowds.” Cira added, “We also publish the ‘whys.’ People tolerate ‘no’ when it’s followed by ‘because’ and a date. They burn gates when it’s followed by a shrug.” Jun and Mira wrote it into the Gate Protocol. Arman sketched yard layouts that made a mob into a line with

Piece by piece, a dark doorway began to form on the floor before me. And then the mechanical voice rang out cheerfully in my ear: 【Congratulations, player Nina. You’ve earned the affection of all residents of “The Happy Home” and successfully summoned the Gate to the Otherworld. 【The Gate will appear tonight at 11 p.m. Surviving players, bring your families and gather on the first floor to open it. 【Anyone who misses the time will be permanently trapped within this instance.】 The live chat went wild—

Then again. The heavy steel gates remained completely motionless, locked tight in their iron tracks. The intense barometric shockwave from the preliminary storm had short-circuited the gate's secondary hydraulic relays, jamming the heavy doors permanently shut from the outside. BZZZZZT. Zaid’s tactical radio crackled to life on the console, Corporal Miller’s voice coming through, laced with static and pure terror. "Captain! Captain, do you copy?! The outer gate relays just fried! The blast doors are dead-locked! We can't open them from the inside!"
