Luca looked her in the eyes. “If I told you I’m connected to the underworld… would you be scared enough to walk away?” he asked. His voice wasn’t as steady as usual. Lucy took a slow breath. There was fear in her eyes—just for a second—but she didn’t step back. Instead, she asked, “Isn’t Luciano Mancini… the Italian don?” Luca frowned slightly, caught off guard by the shift. He studied her for a moment, trying to understand where that question was coming from. If he didn’t know her the way he did, he might’ve thought she was digging for something more… something dangerous.

For a second neither of them noticed. Then Giulia pulled back, looked at me over Luca’s shoulder, and had the audacity to look completely unbothered. “Nina.” She patted Luca’s chest once and stood up straight like nothing had happened. “Come in. This is Luca. Luca Ross. He’s been working on the grounds.” Luca stood. Unhurried. He turned to face me and whatever expression he’d had a moment ago was completely gone, replaced by that same steady unreadable look, like he’d never been caught doing anything in his life.

Giulia looked at me for a long moment. Then she laughed. Real, sudden, completely genuine. "God," she said. "Luca has absolutely no idea what he's got." "He's starting to figure it out." "Yes." She was still smiling. "I can see that. It's terrifying him slightly." She leaned forward. "That's good by the way. Men like my brother need to be slightly terrified by their wives. It keeps them honest." She told me things about the family during those two weeks that nobody else had.

"I need to know these things, Luciano." "No, you don't, Giorgia." He disputed. "What you need, is a fucking stable life. Luca, please tell me you've found her a husband?" There was silence and I heard Luciano sigh. "I have you just one job to do-" "I'd rather move a fucking mountain," Luca replied. "She's as tough as the Carthaginians. Gianna leaned against the armrest while Luca held a strawberry out to her with a fork. She turned her head away stubbornly instead of eating it, so Luca leaned closer and whispered something to her. Instantly, Gianna blushed and finally took a bite. The mafia members from the various families were all professionally trained, so they quickly looked away.
