Mate? Or Die!
I shouted, tears streaming down my face.
Her eyes opened, locking onto mine. There was no fear in her gaze, only sadness.
“It’s okay,” she said, her voice faint but steady.
“No, it’s not!” I cried. “Fight them! Please!”
“I’ve already made my choice,” she said with her voice barely audible over the witches’ chanting. “It’s not your fault, Gilly.”
The witches’ voices reached a crescendo, and a blinding light erupted from the altar. I screamed, shielding my eyes, but the light burned through the darkness, leaving nothing but silence in its wake.
