Cerita ini mengambil seting masa revolusi industri Inggris pada masa Napoleon gencar menyuarakan revolusi Prancis, pada masa itu Inggris banyak kehilangan koloninya termasuk di Amerika yang menuntut kemerdekaan dan sekarang menjadi Amerika Serikat. Revolusi industri sempat mengakibatkan banyak polusi lingkungan di Inggris dan Scotlandia terutama Glasgow dan London. Para bangsawan yang tidak mampu berbisnis mereka semakin tertinggal dan kalangan pengusaha mulai diterima di lingkungan sosial. Pada cerita ini mengisahkan tiga putri seorang Erl dari Yorkshire yang di jodohkan dengan ketiga putra Nicolas Stanley dari Newcastle. Pada masa itu anak perempuan tidak mendapatkan warisan mereka harus mendapatkan jodoh bangsawan kaya demi status sosial, maskawin diberikan oleh pihak perempuan. Laki-laki bangsawan yang bangkrut bisa memilih istri dengan maskawin besar. Dari ketiga kakaknya Lily yang paling kecil dan selalu merasa tidak cantik karena tomboi ternyata malah menarik perhatian Brandon Lington yang bergelar seorang Duke.
