Someone had tossed a blanket over it, probably to keep the dirt and dust to a minimum. He walked to me, my chair in a corner of the room, my back to the wall. He grabbed my elbow and pulled me up. I needed help standing, my ass and legs were asleep. I stumbled but he caught me, one big arm across my chest. He didn't touch my breasts, his thick forearm catching me above them but below my collar bone.

“Guess I’ll need security for Goose.” He smirked, his thumb brushing lazily over my shoulder. “I’ll take that gig.” The room smelled like candle wax and cinnamon, the kind of cozy chaos I’d once only written about. My notebook sat on the table, a clean new one with a sticker that read Book Two. I picked it up, running my fingers over the cover before flipping it open. The first page stared back at me, blank, full of promise. Goose flicked his tail, pressing his head against my arm like he was reminding me who the real inspiration was.

Just sneakers and a light jacket. The city was unusually quiet. I ended up at a small antique bookstore tucked between a florist and a tailor. It had no flashy signage, just a brass bell on the door and a handwritten welcome note in cursive. Inside, the scent of old paper and cedar wrapped around me like a story waiting to be told. I let myself drift between the aisles until a book caught my eye—Letters Never Sent. It was a collection of real, unsent letters from women over the last century. To lost loves, estranged mothers, unborn children.

That way, she would never have the displeasure of hearing the name of Michael, Elisabeth or Aaron Vamcap again. Fortunately, there were more useful books there than she realized, since that place wasn't actually called a library for nothing. It was much larger than it looked, and among the huge collection of titles there were not only books on diverse subjects, but also a plethora of old novels, some in their first editions, which even made Rose a little more excited about the place, imagining that he could at least run away to read all that, while avoiding the Vamcaps... Or, at least, in the moments when Jullian allowed him to, so that his hideous presence wouldn't scare anyone.
