I might have spoken too soon because he is clearly in a bad mood and is willing to spread the joy. Oh, boy. He takes the grilled meat I had just finished cooking and unceremoniously plops down to a seat on the island. I might have been still asleep because I have never seen him act so petulantly. This must be a dream. “Care to share?” I point to the plate he is clutching and present my plate.

Bored out of my mind and unable to fight the urge any longer, I finally throw on my gym clothes and head downstairs. Just to see, you know, casually, if Mr. Grumpy is still there. Sure enough, there he is; brooding, sweaty and shirtless. He’s slamming a weighted medicine ball to the ground, over and over, like he’s trying to murder the floor. His muscles flex and ripple with every throw. Veins bulge down his arms, and there's this low grunt he makes each time he lifts the ball above his head.

At least I will have James by my side. The next few days pass like a blur, but gradually, Mr Grumpy starts to get stronger. By now he is able to walk on his own, albeit slowly around the house. We fall into a new normal, with very little talking. Mostly, I stay out of his way and spend my time outside. I don’t venture too far, but with my sharpened stick, I try to find a way out of this place. The sun is already setting when I return to the cottage, disappointed, sweaty and frustrated.
