Roman said, voice low and edged with something dark and unreadable.
“What?” I asked, still catching my breath.
“First time I’ll be going back on my word,” he replied.
My eyes widened. “No, you won’t.”
He shook his head slowly. “Just know you’ve got someone who’ll keep taunting you to have something with him.”
“What happened to the man who doesn’t go back on his word?” I asked.
Shameless as ever, Roman answered, “He died today.”
I wasn’t supposed to laugh, not after everything—but I did anyway, the sound slipping out soft and surprised.
