I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
There was a merry glint in Helen's eye as she set a conspiratorial look upon the speaker, bending farther down. "I think we ought to play a game," she said low and huskily.
I was surprised at first. A game? Now? But as I looked into Helen's eyes, I saw her sincerity there, her genuine desire to drive my mind off things. And so, I nodded, my mind slowly shifting gears.
"Play a game?" I repeated, curiosity laced in my voice. Helen nodded and a grin overspread her face. "Yes, mam. Whoever wins will be paid by the loser $80," she said, her hands emphasizing that. I cocked an eyebrow, surprised by the amount.
