He lit the main lantern, carefully avoiding the fire-sensitive parchments that adorned the oldest section of the room, and made his way to the rear where the archive ledgers were stored. His hands, once steady from military discipline, now moved with the grace of an archivist, thumbing through texts, organizing letters of ancient clergy, and deciphering forgotten Latin prayers.
Father Benedict had once commented, “You treat these books like holy relics.”
“They are,” Arthur had responded then. “Words have weight.”
