Annabel's POV The streets were alive with children rushing from door to door, their laughter and excited shrieks filling the crisp Halloween night. The soft glow of porch lights and the flicker of jack-o'-lanterns cast warm shadows over the sidewalks, but I was focused on one family in particular. From a distance, I watched Ava and Tristan as they moved along, hand in hand, pausing to collect candy from every door. Jayson stood beside me, his little pumpkin bucket nearly overflowing, but he wasn’t done yet.

I nodded, trying to steady my voice. “Last night was Halloween. Our boss, William Zoo, booked out a rural horror-themed escape room. He said anyone who made it through without screaming would get ten thousand. “There were nine of us. After we went in…” I went through everything—the layout, mechanisms, and performance of the scarecrow character with the oversized pumpkin head. The fairgrounds were already packed full by the time I arrived at the Halloween fair the next day. Ahead of me, a man on stilts dressed as the Grim Reaper terrorized a gaggle of children, and a woman dressed in a skimpy clown costume juggled bowling pins while passersby tossed coins into her hat on the ground.

It was Halloween night. The ward buzzed with a strange energy that night. Paper bats taped to the windows, pumpkins carved in jagged smiles, and the faint smell of cinnamon candles gave the air a kind of forced cheer. Staff had passed out simple costumes earlier, cheap masks, paper crowns, floppy witch hats. It was all safe, controlled, ward-approved fun. Naya didn’t feel like fun.

Guests were expected to start arriving at 7:00 pm by that time the children would be through with the trick-or-treating. We all worked hard, and together we were able to turn the hall into a proper Halloween-themed party room. We divided the hall into two sections, the scary part for adults and the less scary part for the little kids. The long table was set at the end of the hall where the food and candies were set in case anyone wanted some. A station for games to be played and winners would get prizes was set up. Nathan’s response was to kiss her back and carry her into the packhouse as everyone else whistled and made smoochy noises at them. About a week later, the two pack lands were unrecognizable. The two packs had gone all out for Halloween. The forest the two packs shared was now a haunted forest with skeletons, ghosts, trolls, witches, vampires, and whatever else you could think of hanging and hiding everywhere. I stare at the approaching road as I drive from the center of town back home, and I occasionally sip on a coffee I made and poured into a travel mug, but nothing seems to cure my grogginess.
