I love a series where I don't need a wiki to enjoy it. With Hamish, you just read. No spin-offs, no alternate universes, no crossovers that matter. It's a straight line from Point A to Point B, with each book a delightful little detour into a murder. That linearity is a comfort. I don't have to worry about 'Oh, I better read the spin-off graphic novel to understand why the vicar is acting strange in book twenty.' The vicar is just being the vicar. Everything is explained within the book you're holding. In a world of overwhelming shared universes, that's a gift.

I see a lot of people focus on the murders, but for me, the heart of the series is Hamish's relationship with his animals. The arrival of Sonsie the cat is a major moment! Reading out of order would spoil that wonderful, weird development.
