The Awakening
I descended the stairs without hesitation, my boots heavy against the stone, my heart pounding with something I refused to name.
The guards at the bottom straightened when they saw me.
"Alpha."
"Leave."
They left.
I walked to June's cell. The door was already open, Lia's visit had apparently not included closing it properly. I stepped inside.
She was exactly where I expected her to be. Curled in the corner on filthy straw, her back to me, her body a map of wounds that I had ordered. The silver chains caught the torchlight, and I could see the burns they had carved into her wrists, her ankles, her throat.
