He broke off again, covering his face with his large hands. “That… what?” My voice was softer this time. He looked at me, and the tension stretched between us. He didn’t say it. He didn’t have to. Then he leaned back again, eyes on the TV. “I’m not the hero in your story.” His voice was flat, but it carried a quiet sorrow. “Wolves never are.” His words hung heavy in the air. I stared at him pretending to watch the TV, but his eyes weren’t on it. They were hiding from me.

“If anyone could figure it out it's you.” I turn my face in dismissal of his words. “I’m serious. You’ve done things at twelve most males would be terrified to think about. You sacrifice, you love for you people…” he places a hand on my shoulder, “You are my hero. The male I look up to.” “You should find someone else, Chieftain.” I say not ready to acknowledge it. And I don’t need a woman to protect me or order me around. I’ll decide what to do or not do.”

But then, tears slipped out. "Shhh," he held me closer. "It’s okay." "I-I'm not crying!" "You are. I can feel your tears." "You can’t even see me." "No. But I can feel them." I wiped my face furiously. "D-Don’t look until I’m done!" He chuckled, "You hate being seen as weak." "Don’t say that word." "You’re not weak," he said firmly. "You were the bravest of us all today." I swallowed hard, "Thanks... I guess."

i didn't hold back, i didn't even fight. This was it!! I'm ready. Then as my eyes began closing, i saw it. I saw him. The one person i hated the most. Why was he here? That didn't matter. Seemed like i wasn't dying anytime soon. I weakly stretched out my arm to him. "Please, help me"

And look where that got me. The tears rolled down my cheeks unbridled. "Thank you!" I cried, holding the arm of the man who saved me. "Thank you. You have no idea what you've done." "Oh I do," he sounded resigned. There was an odd detached look in his eyes that made me wonder why he looked so... Sad? "Thank you still," I said. "How could I ever repay you?" He shrugged. "I'm not a hero. And I was here to see you actually. Just glad I got here just in time before she could send you to an early grave."

That couldn’t be better! When he got to the hospital wing, I could see that he was stable, but was weak. He took a shot on his tight protecting the princess, and this fact was brave enough for him to make it into my heroes list. Having him at the hospital and talking to him every day made him go up to the top one on my list.
