“What if I can’t see you as my hero after you hurt me?” He freezes, fear cutting across his expression. “I’m not me right now, honey,” he whispers. “It’s not just that I’m so hot to fuck you I can barely think straight, it’s…it’s the need to stake my claim. The wind whistled past us, carrying with it a sense of liberation and the promise of better days. In that fleeting moment, his actions spoke volumes about his character – a person who placed the needs of others above his own, who transformed pain into a conduit for compassion. The world may have seen just a man with an injured arm, but what I witnessed was a hero who defied his own limitations to uplift another soul.

“If you really want to help me, let us leave without your help!” I did not know what I was feeling right now when I told him without stuttering what I truly felt. Was it fury? Consternation? Despondency? Apprehension? Or rather, it was disbelief? I did not know. The feelings were too unnerving for me to portray. I was in a daze by all of this happening unbiddenly. I blinked. My eyes flared. His expression stayed as it was. “Heroes don't exist. Each person fends for themselves. There is nothing selfish about it, little bird. I couldn't accept that the man who had been my hero—the most upright, noble, and compassionate man I knew—was the one doing this to me. This wasn't real. It couldn't be.

I weeped staring right in his eyes which I could see was also filled with such pain for what I was going through, where his hands were soon on either side of my face again. “I know baby, but you should see what your father did as a heroic act of selflessness, he stepped forward and sacrificed himself to save all of us. What he did will be remembered for generations to come where everyone will see him as the hero he was.” He said attempting to make me see the positives, but in that moment, I realised there was someone else going through this.

He argued as his hands brushed against my cheeks and he was warm. The only warmth I had felt all night, and I hated myself for leaning into it. "Rule number three: Never forget this is a game, don't get confused, don't think I’m your friend and don't think I’m your hero." He stressed the hero part and I rolled my eyes. I wish he could actually know how much he means nothing to me. I have never been one of those girls to fawn over him. "You’re the bad one, Jace, I’m not confused." I replied flatly and he smiled.

I’d used the same instincts that kept us alive to decide a life wasn’t worth the risk. My vision blurred. Jax’s hand landed lightly on my shoulder, a touch so uncharacteristically gentle I almost missed it. “Hey,” he said quietly. “You made the right call.” “There was no call,” I said. “There was nothing. We just… let him go.” “We’re not Superman,” he said. “We’re debris in a haunted kiddie pool. Trying to be everyone’s hero gets you killed faster here.” His bluntness scraped. It also grounded.

“You just looked in the wrong direction.” Yvonne pushed herself upright despite the pain. “Why me,” she demanded. The man turned back to her. “Because you are perfect,” he said simply. She stared at him. “You heal,” he continued. “You run toward pain, people believe faces like yours. Soft, honest and brave. You are the hero they want.” “I never asked to be a hero,” she said. “That is why it works,” he answered. The phone still burned with images. The hospital feed shook as someone screamed behind the camera.

"I'm so sorry papa, it's all my fault" Tears filled my eyes as I held his fragile hand, feeling the sadness of seeing my hero weakened.

"I'm —" But I didn't need words. I cut him off by throwing my arms around him, pulling him closer to me, he didn't understand the gratitude I felt. He saved me from my greatest nightmare. He stiffened from my touch as i held him closer, allowing his warmth to seep into me, the sane part of my mind argued but I pushed it away. Because right now, He was the Hero I imagined.
