"Us is the only one that matters," Adrian corrected. "Everything else came from that."
That night lying in bed I thought about thirty-five years of building and surviving and choosing each other.
"Do you have any regrets?" I asked Adrian.
"About us?" Adrian asked. "Not one."
"Not even the messy parts?" I pressed.
"Especially not the messy parts," Adrian said. "The mess is what made us real."
"We're very good at mess," I observed.
"We're very good at surviving mess," Adrian corrected. "That's different."
