He knew too much, and that left me in fear of exactly how far that extended.
“Mom?” I said.
She didn’t look up from the mockup menu. “Yeah?”
“That guy, the one you were with before…”
“Davy,” she said, and the word sliced me open. The gentle caress like fingers across a forehead in search of a fever, those fingers pointed nails at me, carving open my chest in their softness. For their softness. Because she had lost that softness.
“Davy,” I repeated, but it felt like I had no right to that name. “You never tried looking for him?”
