Hailey stepped forward, her hands trembling ever so slightly as she first carefully collected the small, black, pulsating heart in her outstretched palms. In the center of the chamber floated the Heart. It was a jagged, pulsing diamond the size of a carriage. It held a swirling, black smoke. That smoke had a face.

It grew clearer the closer she came. A muffled thud. A harsh exhale. Then, silence again. Cass pressed her palm to the wall, heart quickening. She wasn’t supposed to be here, wasn’t supposed to hear this. But she couldn’t turn back now. The door at the end of the corridor was ajar, darkness bleeding out into the hall. Inside, something shifted.

“That’s what makes you dangerous.” The compliment shouldn’t help, but it does. The next chamber glows red. Dozens of veins converge at its center, forming a massive, beating heart suspended by tendrils. Every throb shakes the air. A small stone altar sits beneath it, carved from bone. The Maze whispers again. “The heart must drink.” Maeven’s hands tremble. “It’s asking for more than blood.” Dax scowls. “How much more?” Kael’s voice is quiet. “Life.”
