“There, so beautiful.” I hold the end of the leash and give a tug, pulling her off the chair and down to her knees. She gasps, grabbing her neck in horror. “Is this—is this…?” She was on the verge of hyperventilating. “Breathe. You're hardly a pet without a collar. Be on your best manners, Kitten, and I won't tug too hard.”

The water in the kettle is whistling from heat and I turned off the glass cooker it’s on before pouring a little into my bowl and stirring with my spoon. I carry the bowl back to the centre table where my laptop is still stirring it, and grin at Chloe, who is rolling her eyes on the screen of the laptop. She’s wearing an oversized brown T-shirt, one I’m thinking belongs to Seth, and there is a cowboy hat on her head. A few of her blonde hair, which is a ponytail under the hat, keeps falling to her face and she keeps moving them aside.

Maci. Her name on my phone screen is like a brand to my soul. My thumb hesitates, hovering over the message like it might burn me. I open it. A picture. My chest tightens as the image fills the screen. It’s her living room, dimly lit, cosy. Curled in her lap is a small, fluffy cat, its wide eyes comically ridiculous and almost smug. A faint grin tugs at my lips before I even realise it. The caption reads:

It's so beautiful, it looks fake, "Her name is Mishi and you'll meet her soon... but she's not very friendly, okay? She likes to slap me a lot."

The image showed Katherine, radiant and beautiful, smiling as she opened a package. The man's foolish grin twisted into something intense. He stared at the screen for a long time, then stuck out his tongue and licked it. "Katie… my baby… come out… I-I'm waiting for you…" Katherine's online handle was "Katie is Hungry," and her fans called her Katie. The package showed no floor or apartment number. The man planned to wait nearby and watch for an opportunity.
