Raven grumbled, hoping for a quiet morning before heading to work since she had an eleven o’clock class that morning at the University. Approaching the door with caution, Raven hesitated before calling out, “Who’s there?” After the previous night's events, she couldn't be too careful. “Open the damn door, Raven!” her friend Katherine barked from the other side. Raven breathed a sigh of relief as she opened the door to greet her friend. Katherine was the only friend Raven had made since moving to Avalon city and working at the university, where Katherine worked in a different department. Despite the tumultuous week, having Katherine around had made the adjustment period easier.

They didn't sleep around or act crazy. When the neighbors found out what happened to me, they rallied together and organized a fundraiser for me. I didn't have to work three jobs anymore. I slowly learned that real safety didn't come from guns or locked doors. It came from people looking out for each other. In the new neighborhood, Draven made a lot of good friends. He grew brighter and more cheerful every day. The smile came back to his face. As he got better, so did I. What Rina did to us became a wake-up call, a reminder to always hold onto your values and not throw yourself into relationships with just anyone.

That evening, I moved into an empty apartment downstairs. After setting up my phone, I eagerly opened the surveillance app. Danny wobbled across the hall like an excited child. He began doodling on their door while knocking rhythmically. The door creaked open, but before it fully swung out, a voice came first. “Finally bringing the money? Took you long enough!” Just as soon as he finished saying that, the door swung wide open. A few large globs of some unidentifiable black goo splattered across Gregg’s face.

The message came at midnight. Raven was alone in Jaxon’s penthouse, curled on the velvet settee in nothing but his discarded button-up shirt. The fire had long since died in the hearth, the city beyond the windows glittering with indifferent light. Her phone buzzed once, no name, just a number she didn’t recognize. She hesitated, thumb hovering over the screen. Then she tapped it. A single line of text appeared: We need to talk. Now. Don’t make me come find you.

~TESSA~ The clubhouse was quiet. Too quiet. Most of the guys had gone out on a charity run Ryder had organized — miles of asphalt and noise, leather and engines fading into the horizon.
