About what it is to be the daughter of a man who trusted the truth more than he trusted his own safety. The book is reviewed in three national publications in the week of its release. Two of the reviews are the kind that a first-time author does not anticipate receiving — serious and specific and written by people who have read it rather than read about it. The third review is in a financial publication and is largely concerned with the Blackwood Holdings story as a corporate narrative, which is not the book I wrote. I read it with the equanimity of someone who has learned that not every reader is your reader and that this does not diminish the ones who are.

The reviews began arriving on Thursday. Patricia Osei had told me to read them but not to organize my understanding of the book around them because the book had been written for the women in the long middle and the women in the long middle were not the reviewers. The reviewers were the first room the book passed through on its way to the people it was for. The first review I read was from a literary publication that described the book as unflinching and specific and written with the particular authority of someone who had lived inside the thing she was describing rather than observing it from outside.

The book was published. --- The reviews arrived across March and April. The editor sent them—the ones she gathered, the significant ones, the ones that she thought Don should see. She sent them by post, each review clipped from the publication, each with a brief note in her handwriting indicating which publication it came from and whether she thought Don would find it useful. She did not send every review. She sent the substantial ones, the ones that engaged with the argument rather than simply announcing the book's existence. The others she filtered out, a service she had performed for Don since the first book, a service he had never had to request because she had simply begun doing it and
