I mumbled. “This is the South Wing,” Lara said softly, voice mechanical like she’d memorized the speech. “Most of the dorms are located here. You’ll be staying in Section C, which is mostly first-years. The North Wing houses the arena, the armory, and most training grounds. The East Wing is for the scholars, and the West is restricted unless permitted.” She kept talking and I zoned out. Because what the hell was this? On either side of the room, there were two beds with canopies over them, maroon and gold, as if I’d walked into the Gryffindor Dorms in Harry Potter. On one of the desks sat a boy bent over his desk with a set of books opened in front of him. There were massive headphones over his ears, and I could tell that he wouldn’t have heard me coming. There was a dartboard over his bed, and there were two darts embedded in it. One of them had found the bullseye, while the other was pretty close to it. I squinted at it for a moment, my brain tingling. Then, I looked back at my roommate.

The dormitory was a large stone structure with four towers rising from each corner of the building into the sky. "We're all in the same dormitory?" Ellie asked nervously. One sweeping look told Z how much it extended to, literally, nothingness. Squinting, Z saw the rows of trees, as huge as two giants combined; it’s the school’s forest, a place forbidden for anyone who was still unready of holding death’s hand. Once they were at the center-part, or at least that’s what she thought, Z wheeled around. Her eyes landed at their dorm, and her jaw dropped. It looked so much like silver armor, with a sling at the back, and a crisscrossing sword. Surrounding this armor-like room, which Z still doubt to be their Quarter, were a dimensional mirror and a statue of two palms cupped together.

Two school administrators stood nearby, speaking in low, serious voices. The whole dorm felt muted, like someone had hit pause. Outside, the occasional crackle of New Year's fireworks sounded painfully out of place. My bed was neat. Untouched.
