5 After everything today, I need a nap.

Isabella José dropped Horace and me off at Mia’s. As soon as Viviana answered the door, Mia was there with Jorge in her arms. “You never called. How did your day go?” “Other than a minor issue of going into shock, it improved.” I grinned. “I should have your program up-to-date by the end of the day tomorrow.” “Tomorrow? Wow, you’re fantastic.”

And, if I got the dreaded act done tonight, I can tell Jason yes tomorrow and it wouldn't be cast as cheating. But then he laughed a humourless laugh, causing me to look at him, confused. What? Did I say something funny? He quickly closed the distance between us, and I stumbled back a few steps, trying to get away from him, but his hand came around my waist just as fast. I looked into his eyes and saw the first emotion since I asked him for his help. It was just there, dancing there... The amusement. "First rule, no one tells me what to do. And secondly, it is going to be done tonight and tomorrow and the day after and for as long as I want... understood?" He said as he held me still.

But in this moment, I can’t help but feel like he’s telling the truth. A lump rises in my throat, and I bite down hard on my trembling lip to keep the tears at bay. Slowly, tentatively, I step forward, wrapping my arms around his waist. My head finds its place against his chest, the steady rhythm of his heartbeat grounding me in a way words never could. I hold on tightly, silently willing myself not to cry and ruin my makeup. The last thing I want is for him to see how broken I feel. “Can I just… enjoy today?” I whisper, my voice fragile, like glass. “I’ll face everything else tomorrow. Please.”
