Her stomach growled but she ignored it, knowing that there was no way he would send food to her that day, she’d better start getting used to going hours or days without food. Phoebe climbed up to her bed, and a soft moan escaped her lips as her back kissed the dressings that caressed her refreshed skin. She turned to the back of the book, and read the synopsis. Satisfied with what she’d read, she turned to the first page and began to read, inhaling the rusty smell of the book in delight. But she hadn't read up to two lines when Lucas pushed the door open.

“Guess I’ll wait to read all about it in your book? How is it coming up?” She shrugged slightly. “I don’t know if I can meet the late August deadline. Every time we go to Pennhurst, I come back home with three more chapters in mind.” He nodded, blinking a couple of times. “Just stick to what really matters,” he said, tilting his head like pointing at me. “It’s not an essay about a whole species, but the story of two creatures that changed each other through love, despite their opposite natures, and how far they’re willing to go for each other.”

The lull after the book reading was a soft, strange creature. We’d grown so used to living at a low-grade roar that the quiet felt like a physical space we had to relearn how to inhabit. Lanc finished his last house and threw a raucous, paint-splattered party for the crew. Chloe started her first nursing classes, her textbooks now sharing counter space with our manuscript. Arthur began tinkering with a new novel idea, though he claimed the real world had ruined him for plausible fiction.

I lifted my head and looked at the gaunt figure by the door. "It's been seven years, Alex. I'm only giving you seven minutes now." Alex's gaze dimmed. He took off his suit jacket and casually draped it over the shoe cabinet in the entryway before walking toward me. His steps were no longer as steady as they had been earlier this evening. I froze a little when I noticed that his left leg moved a little stiffly. Alex sat down on the couch, hands clasped over his knees, like a prisoner awaiting judgment. "Do you remember what happened at Snowridge Resort in Saunderia seven years ago?" he asked.
