Over the next few days, the academy seemed to sink into paranoia.
Students whispered in clusters, darting their eyes toward shadows as if monsters lurked in every darkened corner.
Professors tried to keep classes going, but fear crept through the walls, impossible to scrub away. Sirens wailed at odd hours of the night. Patrols doubled. And yet, none of it felt like enough.
I could still smell the other wolf. The scent lingered on the edges of campus, sharp and acrid, like metal twisted in fire.
Sometimes it drifted past when I was least expecting it, in the library, the training yard, even the field of play.
