Leo stopped breathing. The orange fur was matted with dark, wet blood. The body had been torn open, gutted, and laid flat like a fish on a butcher's block. The head was still attached, the eyes open and glassy, the small pink tongue protruding slightly. But the worst part—the worst part was that the plate was still warm. Steam rose from the cat's open cavity.
Leo staggered back, his hand flying to his mouth. He gagged. Tears flooded his eyes. He wanted to scream, but his throat produced only a strangled wheeze.
