As he made his way across the room, he glanced at the bookshelves he passed but saw no books here that were turned upside down. Upstairs, he placed the book on an entry table in the hallway then paused, ears alert for any sounds like he’d heard this morning. Despite his love of horror, or perhaps because of it, Brad had never been easily unnerved. Scary movies, haunted trails and spook houses, most had little effect on him, and as for real life, he reserved his fear for things like disease, natural disasters, catastrophic accidents. A group of friends heard rumors about a haunted house in the city and, excited and curious, decided to live there for a week. During this time, they gradually uncovered the truth about the haunted house and the death of a woman who had once lived there. The movie featured numerous spine-chilling scenes that made Annie shiver, her eyes tightly shut at times. She loved the thrill of watching horror films, but this one felt eerily realistic, sending shivers down her spine.

Nodding toward the book he said, "Is this what you encountered?" I pulled the book closer. When Laeddin leaned in to see as well, I held my breath, fighting to ignore his beckoning blood. The book had pictures of skulls with smoke coming off them, their eyes glowed red. Human bodies bent at strange angles. The pictures definitely resembled what I'd seen happen with the man in the forest and with Abby. Several different kinds of names were given, but demura wasn't one of them. There also wasn't any information on how they could be killed. "I think so."

The next second, the Patchwork Monster tore the man in half. He tossed the body outside casually. Just then, a crisp, bell-like voice sounded outside. “It’s after work hours, who’s so rude as to be throwing bodies around?” A young girl with three heads and eight arms appeared at the doorway. With just one look at the shop, anger filled her voice, and her hair stood on end. “Who the hell had a death wish and smashed the Number One Must-Eat shop in the entire horror game?”

I reached for the box, dragging it forward—and the box to its left nudged itself politely aside to make room. I stared. “Okay,” I said to no one. “That’s new.” Crown’s ears flattened. From somewhere near the history aisle, paper shuffled itself. A soft whick-whick, like pages turning without fingers. I rolled my shoulders, set the box on the counter, and told myself I was overtired. That the store had drafts and uneven floors and I had a busy imagination. I turned to the horror section to face a stack of hardcovers that had not been there a second before. The titles lined up in strict alphabetical order. My stomach did a small, mean dip.

The title sent shivers through me: 'Dark Powers, Secrets of the Werewolves'. I opened the book, and a strange glow emanated from the pages. I felt a sudden jolt, like a surge of electricity had passed through me. The room began to spin, and I fell to the ground, the book slipping from my grasp. As I struggled to get up, I heard the old woman's voice, urgent and worried. 'Ryker! Ryker, what's wrong?' She rushed into the room, her eyes scanning me frantically. Then her gaze fell upon the book, and her expression changed to one of alarm. 'Oh, no. You shouldn't have touched that.'

“I found this book outside. It has all the answers.” I furrow my eyebrows together. “What are you talking about, Alex?” His attention turns back to the weathered book in his hands. He flips through the pages until he finds the one he’s looking for. “Look at this.” He hands the book to me. I scan the words, latching onto the ones at the very top. How To Kill A Vampire.
