A surge of warmth and familiarity washed over me as I embraced the gentle creature, finding solace in its presence amidst the wild. I loaded two large sacks, heavy with the spoils of my successful hunt, onto the horse's sturdy back. The weight of the meat pressed against the animal's flanks, but it stood steadfast, ready to carry our bounty back to camp. I stroked the horse's mane, feeling the coarse strands beneath my fingertips, a comforting tactile sensation. As I mounted the horse, a sense of nostalgia swept over me. It had been almost a year since I had left behind my normal life, thrust into the chaos of the shapeshifters' war.

She couldn’t afford to fall off—this horse was very tall, and if she lost her grip, she might end up with more than just a few broken bones. She could be dragged or trampled by the horse, or worse. The horse had been fine at the beginning, with no signs of poisoning around its mouth, but the real trouble began when Anna yanked the reins hard, causing the horse to rear up on its hind legs. Carla warned me before I could touch the horse who was looking at me while snorting. I quickly pulled my hand back and turned to her. “But why? He looked so nice.” “Yeah, until he kicks you. He has been his favorite since he was a child, but the horse suddenly became unfriendly.” I looked at the horse again and I wasn't sure if my eyes were tricking me but he looked so sad. “He looked sad.”I muttered, my heart suddenly hurting. “I'm sure he is, but still, don't touch him.
