I nodded, muttering a quiet "Thank you, Alex" as he retreated, closing the door behind him with a soft click.
Left alone, I did a slow turn, taking in every detail of my gilded cage. My eyes searched for something, anything, that might add a touch of warmth or personality to the space. But there was nothing. No family photos, no quirky knick-knacks, not even a dog-eared book left on a side table. This room could belong to anyone – or no one.
