Or rather… what she had not meant to see.
The housemaid, Annabel, had been awake long before the sun fully claimed the sky. It was part of her routine. By the time most people in the house were still buried in sleep, she had already finished cleaning the kitchen counters, washing the remaining dishes from the night before, and wiping down every surface until it shone.
Now she had moved on to the living room, a feather duster in hand as she carefully cleaned the shelves and glass center table.
Just as she bent slightly to straighten a decorative cushion on the couch, the soft sound of footsteps descending the staircase reached her ears.
