We settled on the couch in the living room, Eva curling up beside me with her legs tucked under her. The afternoon sun streamed through the windows, painting everything in warm gold.
"Ace was the most serious child you've ever seen," Eva began, her voice taking on that fond tone people use when remembering someone they love. "Even at five years old, he was trying to take care of everyone."
"Five years old?"
"Mom used to joke that he was born middle-aged. While other kids were playing with toys, Ace was following Dad around, asking questions about pack politics and territorial disputes."
