“And if we rush in blindly, we’re just adding bodies to the pyre,” I shot back, scanning faces around me. “Is another massacre what you want?”
My words hung heavily in the air, thickening the tension.
“They need strength,” Nera’s voice rasped from the back. She stepped into the dim glow, scars casting harsh shadows on her face. “Hope isn’t enough anymore—not since the rebellion left us with nothing but ashes.”
Hope. The word tasted bitter now, a faint memory of something once vital. The phoenix painted on the walls, once our beacon, felt like a cruel reminder of past failures.
