"Scarlett come on, we need to return. Everyone will be looking for us."
Scarlett glanced down from the top of the tree branch she stood on. From that height, she could see the entirety of her father's kingdom, a vast land that stretched on for miles. She smiled at her best friend, Leah, and waved. "Don't be such a killjoy, Leah. We are cooped up inside the castle all day. A little freedom does no harm." "But we've been out here for hours." Leah complained, squinting up the tall tree. "Your mother entrusted you in my care. I have to take you back." "We'll be fine, Lee." Scarlett insisted. "We're not really far from the castle. I want to climb to the tallest branch." "A princess like you shouldn't be climbing trees. That's a boy's job." "And what's my job?" Scarlett retorted. "Being dressed like a doll and drinking tea with the other ladies?" "Well, yes." Leah said exasperatedly. "You're the princess. You're meant to carry yourself with grace and poise, and marry whom your father chooses." Scarlett snorted in response and started to climb higher. "Marry who my father chooses? Be for real, Lee. An arranged marriage is the last thing I want." "But it's inevitable." Leah argued. "The best alliance is always through a wedding. You'll most likely be married off to a prince from another kingdom. How romantic." Scarlett looked down and sneered. "I'd rather eat nails than marry some prince who's a stranger. I want to fall in love, Lee." She bunched up her gown and settled on the branch, dangling her feet. "I want to love and be loved in return. I want to be swept off my feet by my Prince Charming, then he would get down on one knee and propose to me. Not some stranger who was chosen for me because of an alliance." "You need to get rid of those sentiments, Scar." Leah said. "As a princess, love doesn't come with marriage. You marry for the betterment of your kingdom." "Then I'll be the first princess to marry for love." Scarlett said simply. Leah sighed and gestured helplessly. "As you wish. Now come down. We need to return. It's way past noon." "Why don't you head on back?" Scarlett suggested. "I'll be right behind you. I just need a minute." "I can't leave you here." Leah protested. "Your mother would kill me." "I said I'll be right behind you. Just go on. Besides, if the guards are really searching for me, seeing you would put them at ease. Now go, that's an order." She smiled cheekily at Leah and the latter just shook her head and turned away. "If you're not back in ten minutes, I'm bringing the guards." She muttered and walked off. "Yes, ma'am." Scarlett grinned as she watched her friend leave. She and Leah were born on the same day, and they had been best of friends since they were five. Leah's father was her father's right hand guard, so both girls basically grew up together in the castle. Sighing softly, she leaned against the tree trunk and stared into the distance. She longed for something she couldn't name. Freedom? Love? Adventure? She wasn't sure. Being a princess had a lot of limits. But there was one thing she was sure of. Love. The stories she spent her childhood reading were stuck in her memory, stories about deep, intense love and love at first sight. "I'm going to fall in love someday." She vowed to herself. "And I'm going to marry for love." She remained perched on the branch for a long time, daydreaming about her perfect Prince Charming. Then she quickly realized ten minutes had gone by. Her parents would really be worried. Bunching her gown in one arm, she pushed off the tree branch and landed nimbly on the ground. "This damn dress." She muttered, lifting the heavy skirt so she could walk properly. She was just a few minutes away from the kingdom. Suddenly, the feeling of being watched came over her. She paused and looked behind her, her eyes darting around as she searched the surrounding trees. She didn't see a thing, but the feeling grew stronger. Something was hidden in the bushes. Not one to show fear, she started to back away, keeping her eyes trained on the thick cluster of bushes opposite her. A twig snapped loudly, making her heart skip a beat. The urge to run hit her, but she forced herself to remain calm and continued backing away. Running would only make her a prey. Suddenly a large black wolf burst out of the bushes. She screamed as it bounded towards her, snarling menacingly. She didn't run. She leaned down, lifted her gown and pulled out the dagger strapped to her thigh and unsheathed it. As the wolf lunged and slammed into her, she struck out, stabbing the dagger into its shoulder. The creature let out a howl and backed away, limping lightly. Scarlett scooted backwards, her heart in her throat, her entire body shaking. Her legs refused to comply as she tried to stand up. Her body had completely frozen. Then right before her eyes, something completely bizarre happened. The wolf started to transform. Scarlett's eyes widened as dark fur disappeared. Bones popped loudly and reshaped, and the wolf slowly took the form of a man. When the transformation completed, she stared in horror at the young man standing before her, clad in a pair of shorts and completely shirtless. His eyes were unmistakable, a deep golden shade. "A werewolf." She whispered as terror seized her. She had heard about them, how evil and ruthless they were, bloodthirsty creatures who killed with ease. Never in her life did she think she would see one, so close to her father's kingdom. Then the man moved. He grabbed the hilt of the dagger and pulled it out of his shoulder. His expression remained hard, with no sign of pain. Instantly, the wound healed up. Wiping the blood on his shorts, he tossed the dagger towards her. It landed beside her, and she grabbed it, holding it out to protect herself. "Stay away." She said, struggling to her feet. But the dark haired man with golden eyes just stared at her, silent, observing. He didn't make a move, and neither did she. As she started to back away, she heard Leah call out her name. She turned her head and spotted her coming up the path with two guards. But when she turned back, she gasped in surprise. The man was gone. There was no sign that he was ever there. She looked down at the dagger. Faint traces of blood remained on the blade, but other than that, there was no proof that a werewolf stood before her seconds ago. "There you are." Leah said and walked up to her. "I gave you ten minutes. This is more than an hour." Then she paused when she noticed the look on Scarlett's face. "What happened?" She asked. She squinted her eyes and looked in the direction Scarlett was staring at. "Scar, what is it?" "A... a werewolf." Scarlett whispered. Leah gave her a skeptical look and shook her head. "You must have been dreaming. Did you hit your head coming down from the tree? Werewolves don't exist." But as Scarlett followed Leah and the two guards back to the castle, she kept staring behind her. Because she knew what she saw had been real. The next day came swiftly with dread and a million emotions. It was the first day of the Luna trial, and the pack felt the thick tension radiating into the air. Scarlett stayed on the terrace for most of the day, staring at the forest that surrounded the pack. In a few hours, she would be out there, taking on the first trial and trying to survive. She was scared, she didn't deny that, but she was clearly not backing out. Not when she had come so far. Dylan, who had been watching her from the room, stepped out and joined her. He slipped his arms around her waist, pulling her back into the warmth of his body. She sighed and let her eyes close as he leaned down and pressed a kiss to the curve of her neck. "Nervous?" he murmured. "A little," she whispered. "But please, don't try to change my mind again.""I won't," he assured her softly. "I know you really want to do this, and I won't stop you."He slowly turned her around to face him, his hands resting lightly on her hips. His eye
Back at Shadowfang pack, Scarlett eagerly waited for the next day, the day meant for the Luna trial. The second month was far gone, and every day that passed by was crucial and important because it meant the elders were getting closer to awakening Andromeda. That afternoon, she stood by the window in the terrace, watching Dylan train the army of new guards. Caleb and Jordan stood to the side, helping him out. Dylan was shirtless, clad in just a pair of black trousers and heavy boots. His upper body dripped with sweat, the muscles in his arms and abs bunching with each movement and gleaming like marble. Her lips pulled into a silly smile as she watched him. He was perfect, even with the frown on his face. This was the very first time she was seeing him look so serious. Her gaze trailed over to the guards. None of them looked exhausted, even though the training was brutal and heavy. They'd been at it all morning. When Dylan lifted his hand and called for a little break, they dis
The swearing-in ceremony was a success. The new members of the royal council swore their loyalty and allegiance to the throne. Then they were welcomed into the council hall, and the council chambers, where they would begin to live now that they were part royalty. Scarlett didn't mean to rush everything, but she had no other choice. They had to return to Shadowfang as quickly as possible. They had spent a month already in Eryndor, and they had just less than five months to find Helgar, the other elders and the twins, and stop them from bringing Andromeda back from the dead. Scarlett also needed to begin the Luna trial, so she would be crowned Luna of the pack before Dylan would turn her into a werewolf. Now, as the last of the newly sworn-in council members left the throne room, Ezekiel came up to the throne and bowed. "Your Majesty asked to see me." He said. "Yes, Zeke. I have something very important I need to share with you."She got off the throne and started to pace. On one
A week later, a memorial was conducted for Queen Katherine Windsor. She had already been buried, the same day she died. Scarlett stood silently in the tomb beneath the castle, staring at the second headstone beside her father's. Katherine's portrait was placed beside it, just like King Eddard's.It still felt like a dream. The past week still felt like a terrible nightmare she would soon wake up from. Memories of the last night she had with her mother still replayed in her head. Now that she let herself think about it, she understood most of the words Katherine spoke. Thinking about it now brought a different kind of hurt, not the kind that came with tears, but the kind that came with regret and acceptance. At least she knew now that her parents were together, and they were happy. She wouldn't let herself fall to pieces. No, she wouldn't. She had a kingdom to rule, and soon, she would also have a pack to rule over. She had no choice but to be strong. She knelt between the two g
Scarlett raced to the health room. She had discarded her crown, pushing it into Leah's hands before hitching up her gown and running back to the castle. She barged into the room, her eyes falling on the two nurses standing beside the bed. Her gaze shifted to the bed, and she saw Katherine lying still. For a moment, she thought she was still in a comatose state. But Katherine's hand moved slightly, and relief flooded her. Tears sprang to her eyes as she hurried to the side of the bed. "Mom?" she called out tentatively. Katherine slowly turned her head to the side. When she saw Scarlett, tears filled her own eyes. "My baby," she whispered in a hoarse, thin voice. She reached out weakly, her hands shaking with the effort she used to speak. Scarlett crawled into the bed, curled up beside Katherine and cried all over again. When she felt Katherine's weak hands clutch the back of her gown, her heart broke. "Oh mom," she sobbed. "I'm so sorry. I should have been here."The two nurses
A hush went through the crowd when Scarlett emerged with Dylan beside her. She scanned the sea of faces. There were looks of surprise, confusion, a little fear, but no one stared at her in contempt. No one looked at her like they hated her. Maybe that was a sign. Dylan led her forward, where Ezekiel, the rest of the council members and the Parliament members were waiting. Slowly, he released her hand and stepped back a pace. He would have loved to stay beside her all through, but he understood the ways of the humans and he honoured it. Without Dylan by her side, Scarlett's anxiety returned. She gripped the skirts of her gown tightly until her knuckles turned white. The silence was deafening. All eyes were on her. Then Ezekiel stepped forward. He held the royal sceptre, and beside him, a young pageboy held a satin cushion where the Crown of Eryndor was placed. Ezekiel cleared his throat and faced the crowd. "People of Eryndor, we are gathered here today for a special coronation
Scarlett had just rushed out of Dylan's room and was running towards the stairs when she came face to face with Helgar and Beowulf. She stopped short, almost colliding with them. "Lady Callahan." Helgar exclaimed. "Where are you off to in such a rush?"Scarlett stepped back and tried to calm her
Scarlett expected a brutal kiss. She expected a kiss that would leave her lips bruised, a punishing kiss fueled by the hate between them. But the moment Dylan's lips closed over hers, every single thought in her head evaporated. He kissed her like he had done it a million times, lips sliding over
Dylan was furious. Not at Jordan or his hunters, or at Caleb who just waltzed into the pack after three years of being away. He was furious at himself for leaving the pack, knowing he had a human wife living in his home. He should have stayed back, let the hunters go on the hunt alone. They'd don
"What are you doing here?"For a full minute, Scarlett froze, and for two reasons. First, she never expected Dylan to break out from his sleepwalking state. Leah never broke out. Secondly, she was clad in just her pink nightgown, without her robe. With the glow from the candle lights and the chan
